Nature-Spirit Series continued
The Nature-Spirit series was produced in the winter months following my mother’s death. The abstract landscapes serve as metaphors for passage and as narratives of spiritual journey – both my mother’s and mine. What began as drawings to represent my own emotional ‘storms’ of grief turned into depictions of places I wanted to see in an afterlife, as though they were “proof” that life exists after death.

There is a common belief that loose feathers are symbols from the deceased to their loved ones still alive, and after months of finding feathers in my house and car, I started to put them in my drawings. The tumors I had been putting in drawings directly following my mother’s death started to turn into pebbles and rocks, and the sweeps of clouds and dust are more representative of my mother’s great energy than anything else. I returned to drawing bouncing black lines, which in earlier work depicted tracks of movement behind characters, and realized they are identical to the architecture of my parents’ bed, where my mother died, thus turning these lines into a passageway, or gates to heaven..
